As a result of the collision, she suffered severe injuries to her chest, finger, back, neck, and stomach, causing significant pain and suffering.
$100,000 – Pedestrian
Attorney Jaida Sloan secured a $100,000 policy limit settlement for Mr. Silva, who was struck by a vehicle while crossing at a crosswalk. The accident caused multiple head lacerations and multiple fractures to the right ribs, resulting in significant injuries.
ASYLUM GRANTED – DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE
Attorney Ana Clavijo secured a grant of asylum based on domestic violence and membership in a particular social group. Although the asylum was initially granted in December, the decision became final this month after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined to appeal. The case is notable given the heightened difficulty of establishing asylum claims based on gender-based violence and the particular social group of Brazilian women.
FEDERAL COURT VICTORIES IN IMMIGRATION DETENTION CASES
Successfully resolved multiple federal court cases involving wrongful immigration detention, unreasonable delays in immigration processing, and wrongful denials of USCIS petitions. These victories include cases where the government attempted to continue detaining individuals despite immigration judges granting bond, as well as prolonged detention without the procedural protections required by law. In collaboration with the ACLU, the firm successfully challenged DHS regulations and practices that improperly denied bond hearings, misapplied statutory detention authority, and unlawfully detained individuals who had been paroled into the United States or who had lived in their communities for years before being re-detained.
BOND GRANTED FOR FOUR DETAINED CLIENTS
Attorney Connor Futch successfully secured bond grants for four detained individuals across two related bond cases involving two couples. All four clients were initially detained; the two female clients were transferred and detained in Louisiana, while the two male clients remained detained in the New England area. Bond was ultimately granted for all four individuals. Bond grants in Louisiana are particularly difficult, making these outcomes especially notable.
CLIENT RELEASED FROM ICE DETENTION AFTER BOND GRANTED
Attorney Michael Kaplan represented a client who was detained during an ICE check-in earlier this month. A bond request was filed at the hearing, and the court granted bond, resulting in the client’s release from detention.
LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENCE APPROVED
Attorney Vitoria Guimaraes successfully obtained lawful permanent residence for a long-term resident originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The client entered the United States more than 20 years ago seeking a better life with her daughter. Last year, her youngest daughter—who was born in the United States—filed a petition on her behalf. The green card was approved quickly, and the process was completed within just a few months.
GREEN CARD APPROVED THROUGH MARRIAGE TO U.S. CITIZEN
Attorney Vitoria Guimaraes successfully obtained a green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen for a client originally from Goianesia, Brazil.
EMERGENCY RELEASE FROM ICE DETENTION SECURED FOR PREGNANT CLIENT
Attorney Carl Hurvich secured the emergency release of a six-months-pregnant client from ICE custody after she was detained during a routine check-in and held in a field office not equipped for long-term detention. The client became malnourished and developed gallbladder complications, creating serious medical risks to both her and her unborn child. After ICE transferred her to a hospital—where she remained under armed guard—counsel filed multiple emergency motions and supporting affidavits in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. ICE ultimately released the client pending further litigation, allowing her to receive proper medical care outside of detention. The case received coverage in the Boston Globe, Politico, and Boston 25.
EMERGENCY HABEAS PETITION LED TO STUDENT’S RELEASE FROM ICE DETENTION
Attorney Carl Hurvich filed an emergency habeas corpus petition on behalf of a Columbia University student detained by ICE. After the petition was submitted, confirmation was received that the student’s release had been ordered by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
$275,000 – Premises Liability
Attorneys Justin Jordan and Jaida Sloan secured a $275,000 settlement in a personal injury case involving exposure to hazardous conditions at a worksite. The plaintiff suffered symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning after working in an environment with inadequate ventilation. Medical evaluations confirmed that the exposure caused lasting physical and neurological impairments.
SECTION 34A TOTAL PERMANENT DISABILITY BENEFITS AWARDED
Attorney Venus Pimentel secured a conference win for Mr. Mancia after his Section 34 (total temporary disability) benefits were exhausted. The judge awarded Section 34A total permanent disability benefits for a closed period, resulting in a higher weekly compensation rate while he continues to recover. This ruling was especially significant because there was a substantial risk he could have been found only partially disabled, which would have reduced the value of his benefits and any potential settlement. The decision protects his current income and strengthens the position for a higher settlement moving forward.
MASSACHUSETTS JURISDICTION ESTABLISHED IN WORKERS’ COMPENSATION DISPUTE
Attorney Michael Ruble secured a victory in a complex jurisdiction dispute involving a workplace accident that occurred in Rhode Island where the employer lacked workers’ compensation coverage in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The legal team successfully argued that Massachusetts was the proper venue by demonstrating that the employer was registered in Massachusetts, the employee resides in Massachusetts, and all medical treatment occurred in Massachusetts. This ruling ensures that the client’s medical expenses will now be covered, future treatment secured, and indemnity benefits continued.
